R. Gabrielle McCormick

As I drove to a meeting the other day, enjoying the cool morning and Pandora, I heard a crack. All of a sudden, I noticed a long line forming across my windshield.

For those that know me, I am very protective of my Kia Soul. I don’t allow eating, rarely allow drinking, and never let a muddy foot get close to my interior. I’m the type of person that parks at the edge of the parking lot and makes you walk to an entrance; you can only imagine how I felt watching this in what seemed like eternity.

I immediately reached for my phone and called my trusted advisor, my mom. She kept telling me that I must have hit something and just didn’t know it or hear it since I had music playing. I was positive I didn’t, but then she said something that made complete sense: You’ve probably had things hit it over the course of the years, but no real damage if any. The pressure and change in temperature probably caused the crack because your glass had been weakened from previous impact.

I share my experience with you because it’s the beginning of the school year. There’s A LOT going on right now. Be cognizant of any chips you may receive, so that later on in the semester…you don’t crack under pressure. Here are a couple of things you can do if you should feel stressed:

  • Stop what you’re doing and breathe
  • Take a walk
  • Meditate
  • Talk to a family member, friend, or someone you trust
  • Journal
  • Do something you enjoy, i.e. read, play with pets, exercise

Hopefully these scholarship will help alleviate some pressure and stress as well:
